Creating Stable Housing for Children with Learning Disabilities: Insights from the 53 Black Legislative Hispanic and Asian Caucus

At the recent 53 Black Legislative Hispanic and Asian Caucus, I had the honor of contributing to discussions on improving housing for children with learning disabilities. Drawing from my background in commercial real estate and personal experiences as a parent, I emphasized the critical link between wellness and living spaces.

During the caucus, we delved into innovative approaches to housing design, focusing on elements that cater specifically to the needs of children with learning disabilities. Among these, wellness color themes emerged as a powerful tool. Incorporating calming colors like blues and greens creates a serene environment that aids in grounding and relaxation, crucial for these children's well-being.

Another vital aspect discussed was decluttering. Simplifying living spaces reduces sensory overload and fosters better focus and navigation for children with learning disabilities. Effective storage solutions help maintain organization and accessibility, promoting a conducive environment for growth.

In addition to color and decluttering, lighting was highlighted as essential. Natural light enhances mood and concentration, while soft, diffused lighting can create a warm and inviting atmosphere when natural light is limited.

We also explored the significance of sensory-friendly materials, flexible furniture arrangements, and access to outdoor spaces for play and exploration. By addressing these aspects comprehensively, we can establish stable and nurturing environments where children with learning disabilities can thrive.

My professional experience conducting site visits in commercial real estate has reinforced the importance of creating safe and adequate living spaces. As a parent of neurodiverse children, and considering my experiences during the pandemic, I recognize the profound impact of the environment on wellness.

I'm grateful to Ariel's Grace for inviting me to speak, as well as to the esteemed panelists and NY Assemblywoman (Brooklyn-District 60) Nikki Lucas for sponsoring the event. Together, by integrating wellness principles into housing design, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children and their families. Let's continue to create spaces where every child feels valued, accepted, and empowered to reach their full potential.
